It relaxes smooth muscle throughout the body, which is essential: the uterus is smooth muscle, and keeping it relaxed prevents premature contractions. But venous walls also contain smooth muscle. Under progesterone, vein walls become more pliable and less able to maintain their shape under the weight of a column of blood. The vein stretches outward. Over time, the stretched segments become visible through the skin.
Blood Volume Rises Significantly

After Delivery: When Do They Resolve?
