The Forgotten Phase of Motherhood
After delivery, all the attention shifts to the baby. But what about the mother? Postpartum recovery is one of the most challenging phases, physically, hormonally, and emotionally.

Fertilia's Post Partum Program ensures you don't have to figure it all out alone. From lactation consulting with Dr. Manjari to nutrition plans and mental health support, we've got you covered.

Common Questions
About Recovering After Delivery
By Dr. Suganya Venkat, OB-GYN with 15+ years of clinical experience.
How long does it take to recover after delivery?
The traditional 40-day confinement maps reasonably well to the medical picture: the first six weeks are when most of the early healing happens. Bleeding settles, the uterus shrinks back, stitches heal, and energy slowly returns. But full recovery is longer and less tidy than 40 days suggests. Core strength, the pelvic floor, hair, hormones and sleep can take several months to a year to settle, and that is completely normal. Recovery is not a race, and needing more time than the calendar allows is not a sign that anything is wrong.
What should I eat after delivery to recover and support milk supply?
The traditional Indian postpartum kitchen gets most of this right: warm, easy-to-digest, iron- and protein-rich food. Build meals around dal and other proteins, plenty of cooked vegetables, wholegrains like ragi and rice, healthy fats (ghee, til, nuts), and the milk-supporting foods used for generations such as methi, garden cress (halim) and gond. Stay well hydrated, because milk supply needs fluids. You do not need to eat for two or follow any extreme diet. Our after-delivery food guide and breastfeeding-diet list set out exactly what to eat, with Indian options rated.
How much bleeding is normal after delivery?
Bleeding after birth (called lochia) is expected and follows a fairly predictable arc: heavier and red for the first few days, then gradually lighter, pinkish-brown, and finally yellowish-white over a few weeks. It can last up to about six weeks. What is worth a call is bleeding that suddenly gets much heavier instead of lighter, passing large clots, or a foul smell with fever. Our lochia guide walks through the normal timeline so you know what to expect, week by week.
When can I start exercising after delivery?
Gentle movement, like short walks and breathing or pelvic-floor exercises, can usually begin within the first days to weeks, as your body allows. More structured or higher-impact exercise is best held until around your six-week check, and a little longer after a caesarean. The principle is to rebuild from the inside out: pelvic floor and deep core first, before crunches or running, especially if you have any abdominal separation (diastasis recti). Our week-by-week postpartum exercise plan paces this safely.
Is postpartum hair loss normal, and when will it stop?
Yes, and it is one of the most common surprises of the postpartum months. The heavy shedding usually starts around two to four months after delivery and can look alarming, but it is simply your hair catching up after the unusually low shedding of pregnancy. For almost all women it settles on its own by about six to twelve months, and the hair regrows. Eating well and being gentle with your hair help; in most cases it is not a sign of a deficiency. Our guide explains the timeline and what genuinely makes a difference.
What are the signs of postpartum depression, and where can I get help?
The early 'baby blues' — tearfulness and mood swings in the first two weeks — are very common and usually lift on their own. Postpartum depression is different: low mood, loss of interest, hopelessness, difficulty bonding, or anxiety that lasts beyond two weeks or feels heavy to carry. It is common, it is not a reflection of how much you love your baby, and it responds very well to support and treatment. You do not have to push through it alone. Our team includes Dr. Varsha Viswanathan, a psychiatrist, and consultations are online across India. If you recognise yourself here, reaching out is a strong and ordinary first step.
Your recovery deserves real support.
From lactation help with Dr. Manjari to recovery nutrition and mental-health support with Dr. Varsha, the team is here for the mother, not just the baby. All online, pan-India, by video call or phone. ₹399.
