You have a lab slip in your hand that says “thyroid profile”, or a doctor who said “just get your thyroid checked”, and two booking apps open on your phone. One shows a TSH test for ₹239. The other shows a thyroid profile with a crossed-out price of ₹2,073 and a “60% off” badge. You are not sure whether you need one test or three, or why the same blood test costs twice as much in another city.
This guide is about that decision. It covers what each thyroid test costs in India right now, what you get for the money, and which panel fits which situation, so that you pay for the test you need and not the one with the biggest discount badge.
Here is what this post covers:
- The thyroid tests on a typical Indian lab menu, in plain language
- Prices from the labs’ own websites, checked on 30 October 2026, city by city
- Which panel fits which situation: a first check, trying to conceive, on levothyroxine, or pregnant
- Small things that change your result (and cost you a repeat test)
Why Thyroid Testing Comes Up So Often for Indian Women
Thyroid problems are common in India, and much more common in women. In a study of 5,360 adults across eight Indian cities, including Chennai and Bengaluru, about 1 in 10 had hypothyroidism. The rate was 15.86% in women against 5.02% in men, and roughly a third of the people with hypothyroidism had not been diagnosed before the study (Unnikrishnan AG et al., Indian J Endocrinol Metab, 2013, PMID 23961480).
In pregnancy the numbers are similar. A study of pregnant women from 11 Indian cities found that 13.13% had hypothyroidism in the first trimester, most of it subclinical, meaning a raised TSH with a normal T4 (Dhanwal DK et al., Indian J Endocrinol Metab, 2016, PMID 27186559).
That is why thyroid tests appear on almost every fertility, pregnancy and “tired all the time” workup. The good news is that they are among the cheapest blood tests on the menu. How the thyroid affects ovulation and conception is covered in our guide to the thyroid and fertility connection. This post stays with the practical side: the tests and the bill.
The Thyroid Tests on a Lab Menu, in Plain Language
Lab websites list the same few tests under many names. Here is what each one measures.
TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). This is the signal your brain sends to the thyroid. When the thyroid is underactive, TSH rises; when it is overactive, TSH falls. Labs may call it “TSH Ultrasensitive” or “3rd generation TSH”. That is simply the standard TSH test at most labs today, not a premium version. Clinical guidelines describe a serum TSH as the single best screening test for primary thyroid problems in most outpatient situations (Garber JR et al., Thyroid, 2012, PMID 22954017).
Total T3 and total T4. These measure all the thyroid hormone in your blood, including the large share that is bound to carrier proteins and not doing any work.
Free T3 (FT3) and free T4 (FT4). These measure only the unbound hormone, the part your body can use.
Anti-TPO (thyroid peroxidase antibodies). This checks for the autoimmune pattern behind most hypothyroidism in young women (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis). It does not tell you how your thyroid is working today; it tells you whether there is an autoimmune process in the background.
Anti-TG (thyroglobulin antibodies). A second antibody, usually sold bundled with anti-TPO in an “antibody panel”.
“Thyroid Profile” or “Thyroid Profile Total” almost always means total T3, total T4 and TSH. “Thyroid Profile Free” or “Thyroid Panel 2” means FT3, FT4 and TSH. Read the parameters listed on the booking page, not the package name, because names vary between labs.
Thyroid Test Prices in India (Checked 30 October 2026)
I checked these prices on each lab’s own website on 30 October 2026. Prices on booking sites change often, sometimes weekly, and depend on the city you select. Use this table to know what is reasonable, then check the price on the day you book.
Metropolis Healthcare (metropolisindia.com)

Empty cells are prices I did not check on the day, not prices that do not exist.
Apollo 24|7 (apollo247.com)
Apollo 24|7 shows a high “MRP” and a discounted price. The discounted price is what you pay at checkout.
| Test | Chennai | Bengaluru | Mumbai | Delhi |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TSH | ₹459 (MRP ₹1,147) | ₹399 (MRP ₹998) | ₹379 (MRP ₹948) | ₹239 (MRP ₹598) |
| Thyroid Profile Total (T3, T4, TSH) | ₹829 (MRP ₹2,073) | ₹719 (MRP ₹1,798) | ₹719 (MRP ₹1,798) | ₹619 (MRP ₹1,548) |
| Thyroid Profile Free (FT3, FT4, TSH) | ₹1,159 (MRP ₹2,898) |
Redcliffe Labs, Chennai (redcliffelabs.com)
| Package | Price | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| FT4 & TSH 3rd Gen Panel | ₹599 (MRP ₹2,314) | Free T4 and TSH |
| Thyroid Screening Panel | ₹799 (MRP ₹2,801) | FT3, FT4 and the total T3, T4, TSH profile |
| Thyroid Antibodies Panel | ₹2,799 (MRP ₹5,183) | Anti-TPO and anti-TG |
What the tables show:
- A single TSH is the cheapest thyroid test everywhere, from ₹150 to ₹459 across these labs and cities.
- The same test can cost twice as much in another city, even at the same lab. Metropolis lists TSH at ₹150 in Delhi and ₹395 in Chennai.
- The “MRP” on discount apps is not a useful guide. A ₹2,073 MRP and a ₹829 checkout price are the same test.
- Antibody tests cost more than the hormone tests. Anti-TPO on its own costs about twice a full thyroid profile at Metropolis.
I could not load current prices from Thyrocare or Dr. Lal PathLabs on the day of checking, so they are not in these tables rather than being guessed. Both are large national chains and worth comparing on their own sites. If cost is a barrier, ask the laboratory at your nearest government hospital what it charges; many women find it the most affordable option.

Which Panel Do You Need? Matching the Test to Your Situation
The most common way women overpay is by booking a large “thyroid package” for a question that a single TSH would answer. The opposite also happens: a woman planning IVF checks only TSH and misses the antibody result that her fertility doctor wanted. Here is how the choice usually works. Your own doctor may order differently based on your history, and that is the plan to follow.
| Your situation | What is usually ordered | Typical cost from the tables above |
|---|---|---|
| First thyroid check, no symptoms, no thyroid history | TSH alone | ₹150 to ₹459 |
| TSH came back high or low | Free T4 added (sometimes free T3) | About ₹350 per extra test, or a combined FT4 + TSH panel for ₹599 |
| Trying to conceive, or before IUI or IVF | TSH, often with anti-TPO | ₹1,735 at Metropolis Chennai for both, booked separately |
| Already on levothyroxine, checking the dose | TSH, sometimes with free T4 | ₹150 to ₹459 for TSH alone |
| Pregnant | TSH, often with free T4, read against pregnancy ranges | ₹599 (Redcliffe FT4 + TSH panel) to ₹745 (Metropolis Chennai, booked separately) |
| Symptoms of an overactive thyroid (racing heart, weight loss, heat intolerance) | TSH with free T4 and free T3 | ₹825 to ₹1,159 for a free profile |
A few points behind that table.
Why TSH comes first. TSH reacts early and strongly to small changes in thyroid function, which is why it is the first test in most situations. If TSH is clearly normal and you have no other reason for concern, adding T3 and T4 to a routine check usually adds cost without changing the plan.
Why “free” is often more useful than “total” for women. Estrogen, from the combined pill or from pregnancy itself, raises the protein that carries thyroid hormone in the blood. In a study comparing women on the pill, pregnant women and controls, the authors found estrogen-related shifts across thyroid measurements and recommended following a TSH with free hormone measurements, with separate reference ranges for pregnancy and pill use (Toldy E et al., Gynecol Endocrinol, 2004, PMID 15293894). In practice, if you are on the pill or pregnant and your total T4 looks high, ask whether a free T4 would be more informative before you worry.
Why anti-TPO matters when you are trying to conceive. Thyroid antibodies are common: 21.85% of adults in the eight-city study (Unnikrishnan AG et al., Indian J Endocrinol Metab, 2013, PMID 23961480) and 20.74% of pregnant women in the 11-city study (Dhanwal DK et al., Indian J Endocrinol Metab, 2016, PMID 27186559) tested positive. When your TSH sits in the borderline zone, your antibody status is one of the things that shapes whether treatment is considered. Our guide to subclinical hypothyroidism and TSH targets walks through that decision. Unlike TSH, anti-TPO is not usually a test you repeat every few months, so check with your doctor before paying for it a second time.
Why pregnancy needs its own ranges. TSH normally runs lower in pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, so a result that looks “normal” on the general adult range printed on the report may need a second look. The American Thyroid Association’s 2026 guideline on thyroid disease before, during and after pregnancy includes recommendations on thyroid function testing and thyroid autoimmunity for women with infertility and in pregnancy (Korevaar TIM et al., Thyroid, 2026, PMID 42219800). Your obstetrician will read your result against the pregnancy range, not the one printed on the report.
If you are already on thyroid medicine and trying to conceive, the TSH target and the timing of dose changes are covered in can I conceive with hypothyroidism.
Small Things That Change Your Result (and Cost You a Repeat Test)
A repeat test is the most common hidden cost. These are the things worth knowing before you give the sample.
Biotin supplements. Many hair, skin and nail supplements contain biotin, and some thyroid tests use biotin as part of the chemistry. In a small study where six healthy adults took 10 mg of biotin a day for a week, 9 of the 23 biotin-based laboratory tests studied, covering hormone and non-hormone markers, showed interference, with some results falsely high and others falsely low (Li D et al., JAMA, 2017, PMID 28973622). Metropolis’s own TSH test page (metropolisindia.com) asks patients to stop biotin doses above 5 mg a day at least 8 hours before blood collection. If you take a hair supplement, tell the lab and your doctor, and ask how long to pause it.
Fasting and time of day. Labs do not require fasting for thyroid tests. But a 2026 review that pooled 14 studies found TSH was on average about 0.8 mIU/L lower after a meal than when fasting, although the certainty of that evidence was low, and free T4 and free T3 did not change significantly (K M et al., Endocrine, 2026, PMID 42955544). For most women this makes no difference. If your TSH is borderline and you are comparing two results, take both at a similar time of day and in the same fasting state.
Levothyroxine on the morning of the test. If you take thyroid medicine, ask your doctor whether to have the blood drawn before or after that day’s tablet, and do it the same way each time.
A recent illness or new medicines. A bad fever or a new prescription can shift results for a while. If the number surprises you, mention what happened in the weeks before the test.
Home Collection, Aggregators and Choosing a Lab
Home collection. Metropolis, Apollo 24|7 and Redcliffe all advertise home sample collection on their sites. A thyroid test needs a single small blood sample, so home collection works well, especially for women early in pregnancy who would rather avoid a waiting room.
Aggregator apps versus the lab’s own site. Apps such as Apollo 24|7 often list a large MRP and a large discount. The number to compare across labs is the final price at checkout, after any collection charge.
Sticking with one lab. Reference ranges and testing machines differ slightly between labs. If you are tracking TSH over time, for example while a doctor adjusts your levothyroxine, using the same lab each time makes the trend easier to read than chasing the cheapest price every month.
Combined fertility panels. If you need several hormone tests at once, a combined fertility package can work out cheaper than booking each one separately. Our AMH test cost guide compares some of these packages, and the fertility workup guide explains which tests belong in a first workup.

What It Is Called in Tamil and Hindi
Many women search for thyroid tests in their own language, or mix languages in one search.
- Tamil: thairaidu parisodhanai (தைராய்டு பரிசோதனை), the thyroid test. Women often ask “thyroid test evvalavu?” for the price.
- Hindi: thyroid jaanch (जांच is the word for a test or check-up). Searches such as “thyroid test kitne ka hota hai” ask what a thyroid test costs, which is the question this post answers.
Practical Takeaways
- Start with TSH unless your doctor has asked for more. It is the cheapest test (₹150 to ₹459) and the most useful first step.
- Read the parameters, not the package name. “Thyroid profile” can mean total or free hormones depending on the lab.
- Compare checkout prices, not MRPs, and check the price for your own city on the day you book.
- Add anti-TPO when your doctor sees a reason for it, for example when you are trying to conceive with a borderline TSH, or when your fertility doctor asks for it before treatment. A positive antibody result with a normal TSH and T4 does not on its own mean you need levothyroxine. Keep the report, since it is not usually repeated.
- Pause high-dose biotin before the test, and keep the time of day consistent for repeat tests.
- Use the same lab when you are tracking a dose change over several months.
I’m Dr. Suganya Venkat, an OB-GYN with more than 15 years of experience, and my MD is in pathology, so I spend a good part of every week reading lab reports with women. In my video consultations at Fertilia, the thyroid report is very often the first one we open, and a single TSH done well is usually more useful than a large package done in a hurry.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a TSH test cost in India?
A single TSH test costs between ₹150 and ₹459 at Metropolis and Apollo 24|7, depending on the city, based on prices on their own websites on 30 October 2026. Metropolis listed ₹395 in Chennai, ₹350 in Coimbatore and ₹150 in Delhi. Apollo 24|7 listed ₹459 in Chennai and ₹239 in Delhi.
What is the price of a thyroid profile test (T3, T4, TSH)?
A total thyroid profile costs ₹450 to ₹829 at Metropolis and Apollo 24|7 (October 2026). A free thyroid profile (FT3, FT4, TSH) costs more, ₹825 to ₹1,159. Check the listed parameters, since labs use the name “thyroid profile” for both.
Thyroid test kitne ka hota hai? Is TSH alone enough?
For a first check with no symptoms and no thyroid history, TSH alone is usually where testing starts, and it is the cheapest option. If TSH is outside the normal range, your doctor will usually add free T4. If you are trying to conceive or preparing for IUI or IVF, anti-TPO is often added as well.
Do I need to fast before a thyroid test?
No. Thyroid tests do not need fasting. TSH can be slightly lower after a meal, so if you are comparing two results, have both done at a similar time of day and in the same fasting state. Pause high-dose biotin supplements before the test.
How much does the anti-TPO test cost?
Anti-TPO alone cost ₹1,340 in Chennai and ₹1,350 in Mumbai at Metropolis (October 2026). Redcliffe’s antibody panel, which adds anti-TG, was ₹2,799 in Chennai. It costs more than the hormone tests but is not usually repeated often.
Which thyroid test should I do before trying to conceive?
TSH is the starting point, and many doctors add anti-TPO because your antibody status helps decide whether a borderline TSH needs treatment. If you already take levothyroxine, your doctor will check TSH to see whether the dose needs adjusting before you try.
Why is my thyroid test cheaper in one city than another?
Labs set prices city by city. On the same day, Metropolis listed TSH at ₹150 in Delhi and ₹395 in Chennai. Compare final checkout prices for your own city, and if you are tracking results over time, staying with one lab matters more than saving a few rupees.
Talking It Through
A thyroid report is one of the easiest tests to get done and one of the easiest to misread, especially when you are trying to conceive or are newly pregnant. If you have results and are not sure what they mean for you, you do not have to work it out alone.
